Mr Gay NZ: Māori finalists aim to raise awareness, inspire others to succeed

It’s a competition that aims to provide a national
platform to the issues that matter the most
to the rainbow community. As Whatitiri Te Wake reports, two Maori men are vying
for the coveted title of Mr Gay NZ, and to represent the country
in South Africa at Mr Gay World. He’s a pro at barbering, and now he’s a finalist at the up-and-coming
Mr Gay NZ competition. This descendant of Ngapuhi says the main aim is to be a role model
for Maori youth. The competition started in 2009
as a way to highlight the issues facing the rainbow community
to also grow community leaders. This descendant of Ngai Te Rangi has also secured a spot
in the competition. He’s excited to promote the issues
he’s passionate about. Gay rights is also something
that’s inspiring him in the competition. Online voting opens this Sunday
and the winner will be announced at next week’s Big Gay Out. Whatitiri Te Wake, Te Karere.
