Hiker rescued after fall on rock face of mountain

N REPORTS. JOHN: YOU CAN SEE FROM THE STEEP ROCKY MOUNTAINSIDE, THIS WAS NO WALK IN THE PARK. TWO EXPERIENCED CLIMBERS ON THE SIDE OF BIG ROCK MOUNTAIN WHEN SOMETHING WENT WRONG.>>THERE WAS A FEMALE STUDENT THAT HAD FALLEN SOME 15 FEET, THE MALE STUDENT THAT WAS WITH HER WAS ABLE TO CALL 911 NOTIFY US THAT IT WAS A PROBLEM. HIS REPORT WAS THAT SHE HAD SOME TYPE OF A LEG INJURY. JOHN: THE PICKENS COUNTY TECHNICAL RESCUE TEAM SPRANG INTO ACTION.>>THE ISSUE BECAME IS, HOW WE WE WERE GOING TO GET HER OUT OF THERE? SHE HAD FALLEN DOWN A PRETTY STRAIGHT DOWN FACE OF THE ROCK THERE AND WAS ON A LEDGE WHICH WAS GOING TO MAKE IT HARD TO GO DOWN DUE TO THE UNDERGROWTH. JOHN: THAT’S WHEN THE HUNDREDS OF HOURS OF TRAINING KICKED IN, RESCUE TEAM MEMBERS USING ROPES AND PULLIES TIED TO TREES AND BOULDERS TO PULL THE WOMAN OFF THE LEDGE AND UP THE MOUNTAIN SIDE. IT TOOK ABOUT 2 HOURS FOR THE MEMBERS OF THE TECHNICAL RESCUE TEAM TO RESCUE THE YOUNG WOMAN AND BRING HER SAFELY TO A WAITING AMBULANCE.>>THERE WAS AN OLD FIREFIGHTER THAT TOLD ME THAT ONE TIME THAT NO TWO CALLS ARE THE SAME. JOHN: THAT’S ESPECIALLY TRUE FOR TECHNICAL RESCUES, WHERE A LOT OF THE TIMES THE RESCUERS ADMIT THEY’RE FLYING BY THE SEAT OF THEIR PANTS.>>YOU HAVE TO TAKE EACH INCIDENT AT FACE VALUE AND MAKE A DETERMINATION FOR, NUMBER ONE, RESPONDER SAFETY, AND THEN FOR THE SAFETY OF YOUR PATIENT. CAROL: AND IN THIS RESCUE, LIKE MOST, THE HARD WORK PAID OFF.
