Hawaii hikers could be fined for illegal trespassing

NEW AT NINE… BRIGETTE: A NEW PROPOSAL IS LOOKING TO GET TOUGH ON HIKERS TRESPASSING ON OFF-LIMITS TRAILS. HIKERS ALREADY FACE A FINE, BUT NOW LAWMAKERS ARE LOOKING TO ADD ON AN EXTRA FINE FOR THOSE THAT RUN INTO TROUBLE ON THESE ILLEGAL HIKES. NIKKI SCHENFELD HAS MORE. THERE’S THOUSANDS OF HIKES STATEWIDE…. SOME ARE LEGAL… OTHERS AREN’T REGARDLESS OF THE HIKE… HUNDREDS OF PEOPLE ARE RESCUED EACH YEAR. AND NOW LAWMAKERS WANT PEOPLE TO BE HELD RESPONSIBLE FOR WILLINGLY DISREGARDING ANY WARNING SIGN ON A STATE PUBLIC TRAIL. STATE SENATOR MIKE GABBARD : “RIGHT NOW THE CURRENT STATUS OF THE LAW SAYS THAT THE AGENCY THAT RESCUES YOU MAY ASK FOR REIMBURSMENT FOR THE COST OF THE RESCUE SO WE CHANGED THAT TO SENATOR GABBARD TELLS ME IT COSTS AROUND 1500 DOLLARS FOR AN AIR RESCUE… AND IT’S RESIDENTS WHO PAY THE PRICE STATE SENATOR MIKE GABBARD: “IT JUST DOESN’T SEEM FAIR TO ME THAT HAWAII TAXPAYERS ARE HAVING TO PAY FOR SOMEONE ELSES FOR PEOPLE’S IRRESPONSIBILITY.” IN A TEN MONTH PERIOD LAST YEAR HONOLULU FIRE AND RESCUE RESCUE A DAY TO ASSIST HIKERS IN DISTRESS. STATE SENATOR MIKE GABBARD : ALSO KEEP IN MIND THE FOLKS THAT PUT THEIR LIVES ON THE LINE TO MAKE SOME OF THESE RESCUES, WHY PUT THEIR LIVES IN DANGER FOR SOMEONE ELSES STUPIDITY?” NIKKI SCHENFELD/KOLOWALU TRAIL: “TO GIVE YOU A QUICK EXAMPLE I’M HERE AT KOLOWALU TRAIL NEAR MANOA FAIOS AND THIS TRAIL HAS BEEN CLOSED SINCE LAST YEAR BECAUSE OF A LANDSLIDE. AND YOU CAN SEE THE CHAIN ROPE BEHIND ME, SO IF YOU DISREGARD IT AND GO UNDER IT AND END UP NEEDING ASSISTANCE, YOU COULD BE FINED.” GABBARD SAYS THE FIRST FINE WOULD BE 500 DOLLARS, FOLLOWED BY A 750 DOLLAR FINE FOR THE SECOND OFFENSE AND POSSIBLY 1000 HONOLULU FIRE DEPARTMENT IS AGAINST THE BILL BECAUSE THEY FEEL DISCOURAGED TO CALL FOR HELP. HOWEVER H-P-D SUPPORTS THE BILL SAYING THIS BILL WOULD FURTHER DISCOURAGE INDIVIDUALS BY INCREASING PENALTIES FOR UNLAWFULLY ENTERING TRAILS THAT WERE CLOSED TO THE PUBLIC. THE BILL HAS UNTIL FRIDAY TO PASS THE WAYS AND MEANS COMMITTEE. NIKKI SCHENFELD. KHON2 NEWS. DASH:

  1. I mean, from all the rescues that the Department has done for injured hikers, how many are there that was from illegal trespassing? Although it is a big issues for hikers to ignore the sign and hike at places that aren't safe, I'm sure there's a lot of factors we have to consider. HPD does have a valid opinion too, it's definitely possible that this would discourage people from calling for help.

  2. This may be a stupid question but aren’t the firefighters on duty when they rescue people.🤷🏾‍♂️ we paying $1500 for either them to sit at firehouse, do training, or rescue someone lost or unable. Why don’t HPD just issue tickets at entry points on busy days. I’m not saying hikers are correct and yes our firefighters life’s are important and I don’t like them risking life for stupid reasons but I’m not sure they can say it’s cost x amount since they kind of already on duty. But hey what do I know

  3. the rangers should be making it safer for people. mark clear trails…..if a person gets hurt…they have already paid the price for stupidity. either way….yoru paying police to ticket adn courts adn judges or rescues….no matter what…dont take away peoples rights to be with nature.

  4. Many hikers who need to be rescued are traveler's. I used to get tired of watching them get pulled out of trouble and landing on the baseball field. Fine em. So they spread the word not to go on the dangerous trails.
