Good morning Today is day 121, August 25th It’s 5:30 am, time to start a new day I’m going to show you my hiking day on the CDT It starts like this It’s completely dark, the light will come in about half an hour Days are now shorter I have to pack when it’s still dark Getting out of my sleeping bag is my least favourite thing But what can you do… Canada is so close I would really like to be there soon I’m in Bob Marshall Wilderness The most wild place on the entire trail It’s really pretty, I’m camping by a waterfall, I can hear it I will say goodbye to the waterfall and start walking again… My food was hanging in the trees at night This campsite is quite popular and somebody hanged a rope between the trees Usually I have to hang on a tree Cosmetics, food, pot and trash – all the smelly things are there Hanging is supposed to keep the grizzly bears from getting your supplies Time for beakfast, last thing I do before going Good food: bread and nutella, chocolate milk No wood shavings called oats And obviously no tortillas, never! This is the waterfall. Time to say goodbye 6:40 am, let’s go Night was cold as always, there’s frost Sun has rised It’s 7:30, it’s gonna get better now This is Chinese Wall One of the biggest attractions in the Bob Rocky Cliff 40 miles long Bear footprint, small. Seems like it’s from yesterday It stayed cold for unusually long time today It’s after 10 am and I took my fleece and gloves off Time for second breakfast is coming I divide my days into 3 sections: 1: between breakfast and second breakfast 2: between second breakfast and lunch 3: between lunch and dinner and camping I have two half an hour breaks Becouse I keep walking all day I’m as fast as other hikers Or I’m even faster than most I’m glad about it… Now I’m looking for a nice spot for my first break This location is pretty perfect, the view is great For second breakfast I have the traditional unhealthy stuff Not that unhealthy… Dried fruit are healthy and clif bars are not that bad Let’s get some energy… What’s special about the CDT is the route choice Official trail comes from behind Turns right To the left we have the Spotted Bear alternate Going there you can get to Canada one day earlier Most hikers do that You can hike the CDT walking on the highways and never seeing a CDT marker It would also be considered thru-hiking the CDT It is what it is I want to hike the official trail off course I’d choose a shorter trail if didn’t want to hike a long one Seems like I’m going to change my mind pretty quickly There is a wild fire on the ridge It’s getting bigger and the wind is blowing into my direction The trail goes along this ridge in the valley Smart decision would be to go back to the safe alternate You can see it better now I think it’d not be a good idea to go there Lots of smoke Quite scary I guess I’m white as a wall Or a sheet of paper Like my shirt on the border with Mexico Anyways… I run down from the pass Becouse when I got there I found out that there is another fire I think so, it can’t be the same The wind can’t be blowing from two directions I can see the smoke moving across the sky There’s some blue sky ahead of me now So adrenaline is dropping but I was really scared I’m very hungry and need a break but it’s not going to be a long one I want to hike as far as possible from this place I forgot to film when I crossed the river My shoes are wet once again Another stream to cross, a small one, rock hopping Recently I met a guy who quit It was different from what he expected He said hiking is extremly boring That it is extremly tiring And not at all a fun as it looks on YouTube It’s actually true Today is not very typical as for the boredom But it’s like that: you live in permanent discomfort It’s either too hot or too cold You have wild fires, river crossings We’re not doing this for fun More like for the satisfaction when we’re done Some people just don’t like to walk That’s a big problem here They quit first Now it’s so close to the end But I also feel tired, especially after a day like today But that’s what thru-hiking is like Gonna keep walking north… Between other hiker’s footprints I found a bear print Seems fresh. That’s what I need! I will sing and talk to myself now To keep the bears away [I’m singing a polish song for children It’s about little bears going into the woods. They are having fun there] That’s my method for avoiding bears I sing this song and haven’t seen any bears since Colorado I hope it will work this time too I was right about two wildfires The trail is closed But the information is here, not at the pass The fire is here I’m here… so it’s too late But there’s another fire This info is from yesterday And I’ve seen the fire here The official trail goes here Turns and then turns back, they will meet somewhere there I choose this option not knowing about the other fire Anyways I’m alive Finally! 8:48 pm I couldn’t find a good campsite I had to cross a freezing cold stream to get here I will have to do it again in the morning What a day! Tent is up Now I have to do the hang The only choice is a small spruce tree Usually I’m eating dinner in my tent I’m trying not to do that in the Bob becouse of the grizzlies Here are mashed potatoes with bacon bits and butter It’s a pretty bad hang Most people do really bad hangs It’s just too low The ground… Rope… Tree I’m so tired! What a day – it was supposed to be absolutely normal But was full of adventures I’ve just written about them in my diary Sorry for the light… Time to go to sleep, day 121 is over Now my favourite moment… Goodnight!
