4 Hikers Lucky To Be Alive Following Avalanche At Mt. Baldy


AIRS AT 9:00 ON CBS 2. SANDRA: SOME REALLY GREAT STUFF FROM THE CVS ARCHIVES. WE HAVE SOME DEVELOPING NEWS. THIS IS IN THE SAN GABRIEL MOUNTAINS, THE AVALANCHE THE CRASH DOWN ON FOR HIKERS. HAPPENED THIS MORNING — THIS AFTERNOON MT. BALDY NEARED THE MT. BALDY BOWLED TRAIL. JEFF: TINA PATEL IS LIVE. REPORTER: YOU RESCUERS TELL US TWO MEN WERE BROUGHT TO THE REGIONAL MEDICAL CENTER TO BE TREATED BUT ALL FOUR MEN ARE LUCKY TO BE ALIVE. SKY 9 WAS OVERHEAD AS THE TWO INJURED MEN WERE HOISTED OFF THE MOUNTAIN EARLIER THIS AFTERNOON. WE ARE TOLD THE GROUP IS HIKING IN THE BALDY AREA WHEN THE MOUNTAIN GAVE WAY. THEY SLID DOWN SEVERAL HUNDRED FEET BUT THEY WERE ABLE TO STAY ABOVE THE SNOW NOT YET BURIED IN IT AND RESCUE CREWS SAY THAT’S WHY THEY WERE ABLE TO BE SPOTTED FROM THE AIR. IN THIS VIDEO THAT HAS COME TO OUR STATION YOU CAN SEE THEM BEING TAKEN A WAITING AMBULANCE THE ONE-MAN IMMOBILIZE BECAUSE THEY WEREN’T SURE IF HE HAD BROKEN BONES BUT HE WAS ALERT AND TALKING TO ANOTHER MAN HAD A NOTICEABLE LIMP AND RESCUERS SAY CONSIDERING WHAT THESE MEN WENT. IT APPEARS TO BE MINOR INJURIES. HERE’S WHAT THEY SAY ABOUT THE CONDITIONS THAT CAUSE THIS AVALANCHE. APPARENTLY THEY WERE HIKING ALONG THE RIDGE WALKING THE RIDGELINE AND THE SNOW GAVE WAY TO THE UNSTABLE GROUND BENEATH THEIR FEET. THEY DID SAY WAS A LITTLE SLIPPERY SO THE SNOWPACK FROM THE RECENT SNOW LEFT A SOFT SPOT AND CREATED THE AVALANCHE. THEY SLID DOWN FROM THE RIDGELINE WHERE THEY WERE HIKING HIKING. THEY WERE NOT BURIED UNDER THE SNOW. REPORTER: A VERY SCARY MOMENT. WE ARE TOLD THE OTHER TWO HIKERS INDICATED TO THE RESCUE CREWS THAT THEY WERE ABLE TO GET OUT ON THEIR OWN. ONE OF THE HIKERS IS THE ONE THAT CALLED 911. RESCUERS DON’T KNOW THE SKILL OR EXPERIENCE LEVEL OF THESE THESE HIKERS TO WRITE DOWN THE MOUNTAINS THERE’S A LOT OF SNOW AND ICE CREATING UNSTABLE CONDITIONS SO THEY SAY THE AVALANCHE RISK IS HIGH FOR
